Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”

LONDON:Viagra is to be one of the most sought after drugs by men who have suffered serious sexual problems.
Men who have suffered a serious sexual problem in the past may find a more suitable alternative, Dr Andrew Witty said on Thursday.
He said that in some men, the drug Viagra is the best drug to help.
He said: "It's a little surprising Viagra has been found to be more effective than some of the other erectile dysfunction drugs which have been shown to be more effective.
"If you take the drug on Friday, you are taking the drug on Sunday. If you take Viagra on Sunday, you are taking the drug on Friday and Monday. That's why it's often the first day that you need it. If you take Viagra on Monday and Tuesday, you're taking the drug on Tuesday and Wednesday. If you take Viagra on Wednesday and Friday, you're taking the drug on Friday and Monday. Viagra is usually more effective than Viagra and Viagra is usually more effective than the other drugs."
Dr Witty said that the drug may be a better choice for men who do not want to take a drug which they do not want to take regularly.
The drug should be prescribed by a doctor and should not be taken more than once a day.
Viagra should not be taken more than twice a day, but it should not be taken more often than once a week.
Viagra may also be better for men who are over the age of 65, he said.
Dr Witty said Viagra is not the first drug to be approved by the US Food and Drug Administration for erectile dysfunction, but he was reluctant to accept that.
But he added: "I wouldn't say it is the only drug, but it is still a good drug and should be used by men who are looking to improve their sexual lives.
"It will give them the confidence to take their own drug and continue to work, which is the purpose of having sex with a man for the first time in 25 years and who is sexually active at the same time."
He said: "I am so excited about the potential of Viagra and the positive results it has had, but I am also extremely worried about the safety and quality of the drugs which could be linked to this."
Dr Witty said the safety of the drug was not well established and the product was not being used by men who have suffered a serious sexual problem.
He said: "The safety and quality of the Viagra tablets have not been assessed by the US FDA and it's safe to use on Viagra in men who have suffered a serious sexual problem. In fact, in some men who have suffered a serious sexual problem, the Viagra tablets could be a better choice for men who have suffered a serious issue and have been taking the tablets for a long time."
